Storm
Preparation
For the last several years, there have
been severe storms during spring and summer that
caused extensive property damage due to falling
trees and limbs. For several weeks, we
were busy removing trees from roofs, pools,
barns, and atop vehicles. And
unfortunately, the property damage occurred
at costs far exceeding preventative maintenance.
If history repeats itself, this spring and
summer will be no different. However,
measures can be taken to prepare trees for
natural disasters. But, they must be done
well in advance of stormy seasons.
When trees are subjected to high winds, ice
buildup or heavy snows, the limbs flex often in
opposite directions, which can result in a
splitting stress. Trees that are most
likely to cause damage are those with limbs too
massive for their trunks, tree with co-dominant
or multiple stems, aging specimens requiring
special support, and trees overhanging
buildings. Additionally, trees that have
not been pruned regularly or properly are more
susceptible to storm damage.
To help you prepare for the stormy seasons,
we can:
- Evaluate and treat potential hazards such
as stress cracks, weak branches or tree
crotches, decayed areas and utility line
contact with trees.
- Conduct crown cleaning and thinning to
reduce the wind resistance of trees.
- Assess overall tree vigor. Implement
supplemental fertilization and/or insect and
disease control programs.
- Install lightning protection systems in
the tallest trees and specimen trees.
Be aware that many standard homeowner
insurance policies do not cover home and
property damage caused by falling trees and
limbs. So, remember that preventive
maintenance saves money. (See

Hour Storm Service" under
"Services").
